Obituary

WILLIAM EDWARD BARNES, age 99, a resident of Croydon and formerly of Sun City West, Arizona, passed away on September 24, 2014. He was the beloved husband of the late Florence Smith Barnes. Born in Philadelphia in 1914, William was the son of the late William Frank Barnes and the late Ethel Bruner Barnes. William graduated from Northeast High School in 1931 and then went on to receive an Associate's Degree from Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a Systems Analyst for the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1974 after over 30 years of service. William also worked for Liberty Bell Park and Keystone Racetrack from 1963 to 1979 as a pari-mutuels employee. William loved baseball, softball and bowling. During high school, he played centerfield the year Northeast High School took the city championship in 1930. He is survived by his loving children; William F. Barnes and his wife Eileen, Susan Verrillo and her husband Sonny and Linda Barnes. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a niece, Sandra Robinson. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, Helweg & Rowland Funeral Home, 1059 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001, where friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Entombment will be in George Washington Memorial Park.
