Robert Allan Maxwell, Jr., MD, cherished husband of June Lahr Maxwell, his wife of sixty-four years, and beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026.

Born on April 2, 1933 in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Robert Allan Maxwell and Aileen Wyman Bower Maxwell, Robert (Bob) was the youngest of five children. He attended school in Leavenworth until his father's death in 1945, when his mother moved the family to Louisville, Kentucky, where she previously had taught school.

There he attended a local Episcopalian church and served as an acolyte, riding his bike to church every week. Bob graduated from Louisville Male High School in 1950 and Yale University with a BA in History in 1954. A ROTC graduate, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. In 1958, he obtained his MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and subsequently interned, completed his residency, and did a fellowship with the Charlotte Drake Cardeza Foundation at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. At Jefferson he met June, whom he married on August 4, 1962. The newlyweds moved to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where Bob served as Captain, US Army Medical Corps, at Womack Army Hospital.

After discharge from active duty, Bob joined the staffs of Abington Memorial Hospital and HolyRedeemer Hospital. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine, with the subspecialties of Hematology and Medical Oncology. He founded Abington Hematology and Oncology Associates, now known as Alliance Cancer Specialists. He cared deeply for his patients and often continued his rounds until midnight, sitting by patients' bedsides and making sure both they and their families received the utmost care.

When not at work, Bob dove into his many interests with the same level of energy and dedication he showed his patients. He was affectionately called "Bob the Builder" by his grandchildren, as they frequently saw their Poppy engaging in ambitious home improvement projects that transformed the family's 1920's stone farmhouse fixer-upper into a beautiful home, every room touched by his craftsmanship.

Bob also greatly enjoyed pursuing his lifelong interests in history, particularly World War II, current events, classical music, and reading. He and June often attended opera together and visited museums and historic sites of all kinds. Bob attended All Hallows Church in Wyncote, PA. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia, the Medical Club of Philadelphia, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the HuntingdonValley Country Club. In 1992, he was awarded the commission of Kentucky Colonel, the highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky, in recognition of his life of service,accomplishments, and character.

Bob was predeceased by his four sisters, Virginia "Ginny" Brown, Elizabeth "Beth" Bright, RuthGraham, Patricia "Laurie" Tenney, and by his granddaughter, Emily Anne Finn.

He is survived by his wife and their three children, Carolyn Finn (Terence), Jennifer Merryman (Adrian), and Robert A. Maxwell III (Suzy), and three grandchildren – Addison, Anna, and Grace Merryman.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, All Hallows Episcopal Church, 262 Bent Road. Wyncote, PA 19095, where relatives and friends will be received after the service.
