Obituary

A life worth celebrating! Janice S. Bers, age 98, died peacefully June 1, 2017 surrounded by loving family. Preceded in death by her husband, Julian, of almost 60 years. Janice Bers' good works, successful undertakings and efforts benefitting the community are legendary. Janice's contribution to the community began in the 1930's as Camp Director at Camp Council, a summer camp for underprivileged children, and continued throughout her life. She provided volunteer leadership and fundraising to organizations including her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, United Way, Keneseth Israel, Jenkintown Day Nursery, and the Abington Hospital. Janice and Julian received the United Way "50 Year Award" for their deeds and contributions. At the age of 83, Janice received the "Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year" awarded by the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Over 800 people gathered in the Crystal Tea Room at the Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia to deservedly honor her. Abington Hospital presented the "Muller Center's, Suzanne Roberts Senior of the Year Award" to Janice for exceptional volunteer fundraising leadership for almost half a century. And, she was the honoree at the memorable Abington Hospital, June Fete Gala at the Union League in Philadelphia which was replete with its own Mummer's Parade. However, she believed her greatest achievement was the love of her husband, family, and friends. She is survived by her children Wendy Trow-Fox and Remy Fox; Nan Bers and Harry Sears; Andrew Bers; her 3 granddaughters, and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorial Service was held on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Keneseth Israel. Interment was in Mount Sinai Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Abington Health Foundation, 1200 Old York Rd., Abington, PA 19001; Jenkintown Day Nursery, 796 Baeder Rd., Jenkintown, PA 19046, or Keneseth Israel, 8339 Old York Rd., Elkins Park, PA 19027.
